1. Experts/media were wrong again. 2. Ventilators were adopted w/o a random control test but nobody complained because Trump didn’t praise the usage. https://twitter.com/CNN/status/1253210003231694850 …

if the doctors miraculously knew the best way to treat a new disease they'd never seen before the conspiracy types would say that proved they knew it was coming

Very true...the doctors have always tried things based on studies. They were trying Hydroxychloroquine way before Trump mentioned it. They were doing anything and everything they could to save the patients from a virus about which little was known

Consensus builds up gradually with mounting evidence. First it was masks, now ventilators and next it will be about relaxation of lockdown.

early intubation practice was based on experience from SARS/MERS but also driven by lack of PPE (noninvasive aersolization). COVID unique compared to traditional severe hypoxic resp failure which are usually accompanied by septic shock (necessitating intubation)
-
alternative to intubation in almost all other diseases is usually a rapid death. Disingenuous to suggest management was driven by politics. All physicians were excited by HCQ to work early on, same with remdesivir. We all want a magic pill but we can’t be driven by anecdotes.

strangely inconsistent about what interventions require a RCT and which ones don’t however.
-
It's reasonable to use interventions demonstrated to work on similar diseases, while simultaneously collecting data on their effectiveness. That seems like what happened with ventilators.
