Spelt Davies the Welsh way
My father said they did the same thing in Wales when he was a kid. A lot of people share the same last names in Wales, so they'd say "Davis the post" for Mr. Davis the postman, and "Davis the shop" for the Mr. Davis who had the shop in town.
