In the past what has made cities fall is when trade routes no longer go through them, either because trade dries up or gets rerouted. Presumably when they fall in the future it will be for reasons similar in shape. I don't see any such forces threatening NYC at the moment.

In future, cities which can't provide skilled resources (either due to lack of investment in education or lack of progressive culture) or don't have tourism will become ghost towns. NYC has no such problem.. but many cities in fly over states will not survive.
