You know, if there had been some serious investigative journalism prior to the current catastrophe into why the FDA was so bad at approving new technologies, we might all be in a better place. Instead we got thinkpieces on the dangers of scooters.

Thinkpieces on the dangers of scooters are the Juicero of journalism. Except this level of effort has become the default, not the exception.

You could even argue putting the "think" in "thinkpieces" in quotation marks..

Because there’s almost no return on investment for putting in more effort. It’s unreasonable to expect journalists to work harder if they’re not getting paid for it.

The money isn't why they say they get into the job, so yeah it's suddenly reasonable to expect journalists to do things for the reasons they say they occupy the role.

What role do you think technology played in that degradation?

It has been enormously disruptive, from Craigslist taking away a huge source of revenue to Twitter et al tempting them to write clickbait. But ultimately it's up to journalists to decide if they're going to do good work.

Perhaps one early benefit of the COVID epidemic will be social innovation within the tech media. Perhaps premature, but hopefully @balajis disrupted tech journalism into realizing that accountability & ethics matter within their line of business; same as all other industries.

A reminder to seek out and subscribe to / donate to great journalism. Deep, thoughtful journalism doesn’t survive well on advertising supported models.

Juicero is an interesting example--maybe tech was solving unimportant problems. A $700 juicer that squeezes a bag of juice a few times a day is excessive, but a $700 ventilator that can squeeze a bag valve mask all day long would now be pure genius and might even save the world.
