Something I taught my 11 yo: Practice teaches you how to do things without having to think consciously about each step. So even when you "already know how" to do something by making a conscious effort, you can often reach another level of knowing how to do it through practice.

I tell my kids something similar - that practice moves things from conscious to subconscious

this is such a wonderful lesson to teach a child. I did not really *grok* deliberate practice and what it means to practice until I was well into late adolescence. I chalked a lot of things up to natural ability and saw practice as simply forced repetition and punishment

classical academic citation: exceptional violinists who spent less total time practicing but greater time on focused practice on phrases they struggled with (as opposed to end to end repetition of pieces)

This lesson is pounded into my 12yr old's head with baseball practice. So many situations they practice over and over again so they don't have to think through the situation fully when the slow pace of play suddenly requires swift action.

There’s a downside though if you go back into “supervised” mode it becomes slower/difficult/frustrating reasoning from first principles on that activity. Grammar is a great example of that.
