People who ask for book recommendations don’t read.
That is not true in my experience. The person I know who most consistently asks for book recommendations (to the point of once photographing my bookshelves) is Patrick Collison, and he probably also reads the most of anyone I know.

I ask for recs all the time. Probably read 30-40 books a year. Recs help me learn new things.

I think it comes down to : 1. Whom are you asking for recommendation? 2. What is the intention? 3. Whether you evaluate the recommendations yourself or not. There are a lot of not-so-great books out but also ones which are valuable for x but irrelevant for y.
