Something I explained to my 11 yo: When your brain tricks you, it's often because it's following a rule that made sense for most of our evolution. (The examples we were talking about were target fixation and the Monte Carlo fallacy.)

once heard that when insurance co's train their experts in art fraud detection, they often will show them paintings upside down or inverted so that the brain doesn't fill in the gaps with prior knowledge and obscure any clues
This works not just for recognizing fakes, but for recognizing bad paintings generally.
