As someone that has caught far too many spreadsheets of "data" from Chinese manufacturers that had =RANDOM() and =ROUNDUP() formulas in the "dataset". It's usually round up.

They could have figured out the 50% increase by looking at excess death statistics in comparison to the same date from past years. Whatever anomaly there is they could have ascribed to it.
