This article was so helpful to understand how the PPE situation can be improved. I hope that our government can appoint a leader that can help coordinate on all fronts. Feels like a solvable problem that requires focus and hustle for many upcoming months from a capable leader!

Scaling anything 20x is no simple feat. Requires not only leadership, but much advance preparation. Unfortunately, this is politically unfeasible. 5 years from now, people will be asking why are we spending so much current money on stockpiles, having totally forgotten present.

Politicians do not favor spending that won't help them get reelected. Otherwise we'd have a lot more public goods spending and a lot less entitlements spending. Entitlements starve public goods spending.

This is what happens when you optimize for efficiency and completely forget about resiliency. Resiliency always comes at the expense of efficiency, but it's worth it.

Obviously no one in that supply chain ever played the “Beer Game” invented in the 1950s by Jay Forrester from @mit illustrating supply chain dynamics. Baffles me how few people understand complex systems. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Before the Wuhan Virus was declared as a Pandemic by the WHO, I've heard/read a lot of stories of Chinese people in other countries (like Australia) buying up face masks and other medical stuff by the ton, and shipping them back to china.

When I had a beard I used a PAPR at work. It covers the whole head and face instead of using a mask, head covering and goggles. One piece ...and by blowing fresh cool air over your face it increases comfort. The scars I see on nurses from Wearing masks are infection vectors.

Oh ..and they can use standard filters that are many times more protective than a cheap mask but the good ones can be cleaned quickly.
