There are dozens of different parts of the Post that all do different things. There's opinion on the news side, news on the opinion side. I'm part of the Global Opinions section and I write more opinion than anything. But I can break big scoops there too. It's good,.

It used to be the norm that “opinion” writers / columnists would break need in their column. Sadly, it’s no longer as common (I’ll let others fill in the reasons). But, thankfully, each of the national papers has columnists who still get a scoop occasionally.
