I still haven’t got a good response to why terrible leadership is the only reason US is going through this while excellent leadership in France led to a much higher number of deaths (per capita)

I don't usually resort to arguments from authority, but if a point about epidemiology made sense to Bergstrom and not to me, my default assumption would be that I was mistaken.

France under reported the deaths up to a certain point in time when it became clear in elderly care a lot of people were dying without being tested. They changed that.
