People have always assumed they could pick between “big government” and “small government”. But that was never the choice on offer. It was always between competent government and incompetent government.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1248954137699651584 …

I favor small government, but not so small that it can't respond to a pandemic. Dealing with pandemics is exactly the sort of thing a good federal government should be able to do.

You're not giving governments enough credit if you don't think they can do better except by getting bigger. And in fact the most visible example contradicts you. The government has more employees now than it did under Obama, yet surely it was more effective under Obama.

I think it’s worth it to acknowledge the idea of “small government” has conflated notions and has often meant creating large ‘incompetent’ government in the short term to create lasting public mistrust. We need to redefine our lens towards competency and effectiveness.

Well said Sunil, painting with broad strokes on this topic will miss the nuance in people’s thoughts in these issues.

To make my point abundantly clear: the concept of “small government” in the US has been co-opted by people who don’t really want small or constrained government, but are happy to destroy the effectiveness of government in their quest for power.

And every time people say “I support small government”, at least in this country, and at least in this political era, what they’re actually doing is blowing wind into the sails of people who will take that energy and use it to build a vast and malicious government.

No one in the Democratic party says that you can always make the government better by making it bigger, but the GOP talks as though you can always make it better by making it smaller.

Dems don't care if gov't is big or small, so long as it's effective. The GOP doesn't care if gov't is big or small, so long as it enriches them.
