Low-level is not shit. It has different trade-offs (speed, execution efficiency and hardware verbosity over ease and speed of code development [built-in features, code verbosity]

Why would there be a field that is only 8-bits anywhere in a modern game? Isn’t working on 32-bit fields better optimized on modern CPUs?

Looks like a conscious choice though. Unless eg. the score of the game is used enough in the AI code that the memory compactness pays off in term of performance, this looks curious.
