Founders pick bad startup ideas. Good startup ideas pick founders. (This is facile, I realize, but there is a lot of truth in it.)

The opposite is the startup that happens because people think it would be cool to start a startup, and then go looking for an idea. (Though to be fair, Amazon is an instance of this.)
-
This happened to us. First start up, thought was amazing idea. Got a patent. World not ready though. This led to a second idea that quickly gained traction. New start up now uses first start-up's technology.

Do you think that this take might fall into selection bias since there are a lot of examples and counter-examples on both sides. Ex: Amazon was pretty much planned before Jeff started

I find this is also true with http://Standups.io . Just got started as a side project, which I never thought would ever evolve into a company.

Also can I tell if I can only pick bad ideas as a founder?

I'd add that good ideas find those that are able to pivot to them.

I think most good projects and ideas in the world follow this path, strating as side projects or as smth unimportant. Just goes to show you how difficult it is to predict which ideas will be successful or not.

This is a plus for side projects. If you see time as an investment, for every side project, you can take like 10% of time and see how it goes while keeping the other 90% (day job). Diversification can pay a lot in the future.
