      When I bought extra space for GMail, I got logged into a "google account" that I'm logged into even when I do searches. Searches are much slower logged in. And I'm not sure if I can log out without logging out of GMail. Solution: Use http://duckduckgo.com  for search.

      Here's another option that may be even better: http://startpage.com . It delivers actual Google search results, but without any of the extra crap on the page. In other words, it's like what Google used to be.

          Good question! Startpage generates its income from contextual advertising (ads based on your search query, not your personal data).
