          Shouldn't we adjust for population? In a small country that experienced explosive growth in the number of cases, deaths, etc, I would similarly expect those numbers to taper off more quickly than in a large country where the growth was slow.

          No, because viral spread doesn't care how many people there are to infect: it wants to infect 100% of whoever is there. Density, maybe an argument could be made about that, but humans have fairly well-defined socialization footprints regardless of where they live.
