Two principles I've been teaching my 11 yo about programming: 1. Whenever you change a program, test it. 2. Adjust the size of your changes based on your confidence. Start with small changes. When those work, you can make bigger ones.

My kids started with Minecraft and now on Swift playgrounds. FYI, The Mac version is much better than the iPad version.

I would highly highly recommend Scratch Jr. from
@scratch (an MIT project). Great to teach kids general coding, loops and conditions visually. Also teaches message passing concepts. Just brilliant and my 5 year old loves it. -

I would say the goal is to facilitate strategic thinking and particularly cause and effect at this age. Beebots are very simple and straight forward. But even just mazes are good too.
