Don't worry about kids acquiring bad programming habits when they're first learning. The only habit that matters is the habit of programming. Tidiness can come later. Enthusiasm can't.

hacking games too. back when the xbox 360 was JTAGable and allowed you to modify the games source code and run it unsigned. unfair advantage in the game and so many fun mods drove me to learn c++

Do you think the complexity of setting up a GUI framework (header files, libraries, message queues, handling window messages etc.) takes away from the programming experience...as compared to BASIC where the only step needed to setup graphics mode is "SCREEN 2" ?
