When you understand how health insurance in the US came to be tied to one's job, it's even clearer what a hack it is. (It happened because US companies during WW II couldn't compete for workers by raising wages, which were fixed. So they started offering health insurance.)

I've been trying to find a good short read on this. Can you please recommend a source? How was it before? Through the community? (family? church?) -- Or was it not a big political issue because people were not getting as sick as they do today with mysterious autoimmune disease?

I read about it in one of the books I read for "The Refragmentation" (http://paulgraham.com/re.html , bibliography at the end), but I don't remember which. I'm not sure what people did before, but I suspect it was less of an issue, because there weren't so many expensive therapies.

You can just get rid of the tax subsidy on employer sponsored healthcare and that would fix it. We should fight for this + a public option.
