It used to be that if you wanted broad exposure for something, you'd try to publish it in a newspaper. Now all that would achieve is to hide it from most people behind a paywall.

I bet in the print era I read 5 or 10 copies of the NYT for every one I bought.

Good point. I suspect yr larger thesis is correct, esp for smaller pubs. At some point we all max out on number of subscriptions we'll pay for. Subscription prices are steep because ad revenue is way down. And previously free pubs are now gated. Would love to see a reach study.
