But I don't think anything on the scale of Watergate could have been exposed by amateurs. It required dogged sleuthing over a course of months, which required someone to pay their bills while they did it.

Yes non-journalists investigate things and write articles about it. It's possible for a non-journalist to do it well. But it's rare. Standards in ethics, transparency, sourcing, accountability, etc are important, particularly when investigating power centers.

Amateurs most likely wouldn't have been able to bring to light stories like the Weinstein story, the Boston Globe's Catholic church story, or Watergate. We should curb shitty journalism, but to suggest there's no room for professional journalists seems like a stretch
