Equal? I find that blog posts by domain experts are usually better than articles on the same subject by professional journalists.

Maybe true for topical, explanatory blog posts, but investigative journalism is rarely done by anyone but professional journalists. That takes training and expertise.

They were nonce domain experts that we needed when news flowed through a narrow "channel" of print and broadcast. It was sort of like reusing a variable. Now we can have actual domain experts.

Carreyrou built on work done by a dude on a pharma blog, and a couple of whistleblowers. He just had a bigger platform than those guys.
