The one form of equality a journalist will always resist is the idea that everyone is now equal to a journalist. https://twitter.com/vladsavov/status/1244523990258876416 …

Equal? I find that blog posts by domain experts are usually better than articles on the same subject by professional journalists.

It's not about the quality, but access to distribution

Maybe true for topical, explanatory blog posts, but investigative journalism is rarely done by anyone but professional journalists. That takes training and expertise.

Is that true? I feel sure I've read posts by individuals who investigated some mystery.

They were nonce domain experts that we needed when news flowed through a narrow "channel" of print and broadcast. It was sort of like reusing a variable. Now we can have actual domain experts.

This is true but investigative journalists are still critical to discover ‘secrets’ - information that people have an incentive to not release

Professional journalists should be the ones asking the questions and commenting on the answers. They should be an impedance match transformer between the experts and the majority of readers.

If everyone’s a journalist then why did it take a professional journalist like John Carreyrou to take Theranos to the ground? Numerous such examples where pathbreaking stories that require rigorous research and followups are only seen to their ends by professional journos

Carreyrou built on work done by a dude on a pharma blog, and a couple of whistleblowers. He just had a bigger platform than those guys.

Correct, and the remarkable thing is how many people STILL refuse to admit it.
