Human psychology seeks an optimistic narrative. Unfortunately, this works against the resolution of this crisis. This could explain also the lack of use of masks in public. They think that it can't be that bad that everyone needs to wear a mask. It is that bad!

I'm surprised how much wishful thinking clouded rational decisions in my case. I was literally laughing internally at buying masks/disinfection for 'just in case' scenario.

"Wishful" thinking for sure, also being real-news-adverse. It's easier for a media to describe any event within the frame of a former well-known event. (Say, flu).
