Something I didn't fully realize till the past month: it's dangerous to have a leader whose base holds him to a low standard. If Trump's base insisted he take charge of the Covid-19 response, he'd have to. But since they're satisfied with press conferences, that's all we get.

Genuinely curious as to why you had this realization last month, and not three years ago.

The problem was obvious from the start, but the extent of it wasn't clear till this crisis. (Maybe even now it's not clear. Maybe he could do even worse without losing them. Scary thought.)

Intelligence services alerted him to the gravity of the problem months ago. He threw out the playbook that had been prepared. He downplayed it for weeks when they could have been ramping up production of tests, masks, ventilators. Took a week to invoke Defense Production Act

The issue stems from a lack of “founder mentality” in the society we’ve created. There’s a lot of pretending to care leading to a weak will to drive success and an easy fracturing between teams. This effect is just amplified during times of crisis. We’re all in thus boat together

Have Italy, Spain, France, the UK and EU performed better than the US in the current crisis?

In terms of the curve... I think it looks that way so far. We probably won't know for a while

They are all in, nothing will make them hold him to a higher standard. He will continue to drag them down with him.

Pushing back a bit: not only was the problem obvious from the start, but so was the extent of the problem. Why? Because he’s a textbook example of a sociopath. But he’s a sociopath who speaks with certainty. Frighteningly, his base equates certainty with authority.

Unfettered capitalism rewards sociopathic behavior greatly.

We all knew something like this was coming. That’s what the tears where. It’s not surprising, but it is surreal and scary to see it take form.
