Baking feels like programming in a language without a repl. You can't experiment. You have to get everything just right, and you only find out afterward if you did.

programming isn't about theory, though - it's about trying things constantly and seeing what works. in baking, you can't do that as much and have to rely on theory because trying is so much effort

My father was a programmer. One night he brought home a box that was 3 feet long filled with punchcards. He needed to find the three that were out of sequence by morning. I decided right then and there I would not mess with computers. Smartphone, Kindle don’t count???
