One thing outsiders don't get about the tech industry is that on the whole they use the least tech they can get away with. There are definitely individuals who like to over-engineer things, but natural selection means their stuff makes up only a small part of the industry.

If you can't manage your business' first ten customers in a spreadsheet and correspondence you probably don't have a real business.

This mirrors a lot of advice given during this pandemic like “go out only when necessary,” “don’t hoard goods,” etc. It’s a time to do as little as possible across the board.

The main problem is to nail this "the main thing holding you back." It is not always clear and sometimes even unknown.

Respecting what came before is important, but one must find a fine balance between innovation and using 'off the shelf parts'. The threshold depends on the particular startup (context), it seems.
-
Thinking further... even the purest 'innovation' is reusing preexisting concepts (ideas, algorithms, etc...). It is then a matter of choosing the right level (layer) of preexisting off-the-shelf parts: from 1st principles as the lowest to the X-as-a-Service as the highest level.

As a grain farmer I have found this to be an important lesson. Too many things I *could* do, but not enough time to do everything. Only focus on immediate needs (especially during growing season).

Primary waste in lean is overproduction. Seems smart to focus on tasks that are a direct value-add to customers. e.g. don't work on some component b/c it's an "interesting engineering problem". Customers don't care if you use direct SQL vs. a fancy ORM. As long as it works.
