For some companies, remote interviews may be the first step toward remote work.
Under current circumstances, that would be the most reasonable step by far.
I've seen a company go from a "no-remote policy" to "only-remote" in basically 24 hours. Pretty impressive.
Remote interviews are the only thing harder than in person interviews for those of us in poverty. Eg. Mac is 11 years old and iPhone screen is cracked and glitches out every few minutes such that I need to tap home and cycle screen power. In person: no haircut, worn out clothes.
