@naval @paulg People often think that it's better to work in a company as an employee to have some experience before starting a business. What's your take on this opinion?

I used to think it would be better to work for some other company for a while before starting a startup, but I changed my mind. Nothing teaches you about startups like actually starting one.

Aren't there positives in working for other companies first, such as understanding the sector and learning from their mistakes?

          Definitely positives. Just not net.

Like getting a degree, having friends, not being a teenager, spending some time in a "normal" company gives you some perspective and wisdom. A lot of startups flame out from the errors people who don't know anything outside their tiny startup bubble.

Working at a good very early stage startup under a great founder can help one learn hiring/lean product development/starting culture and good management I learnt about importance of “doing things that dont scale” while working for a YC company :)

I personally learned so much from a couple of great leaders early in my career. I couldn’t imagine how long it would have taken me to learn some of those leadership lessons on my own, if ever.

I see, but I think this highly depends on which company you work for.

But working elsewhere teaches you a lot of other things: concrete problems peers don't know [*], how (not) to structure a workplace, etc. [*] @levie has eloquently made the point that there's a lot of money in building tools for businesses but 22yos don't know about the needs.

Perhaps both aren't mutually exclusive. Your advice applies really well to startups- work at one before running one. Things get crazy and if we don't know what to expect, we are riding on luck. A job at Goldman Sachs or even Google for that matter won't prepare us for startups.
