One of the most encouraging things I've noticed, now that the initial shock is wearing off, is the number of different organizations (both for-profit and nonprofit) starting rapid ad hoc collaborations to attack some aspect of the Covid-19 problem.

Which companies specifically? Maybe they fear their customer base wil shrink? Brand equity for once this is all over? Doing feel-good stuff at a discount?(instead of taking profit then spend it on feeling good?)
Is it that surprising that they'd want to save their friends and families from dying? Do they need an ulterior motive?

Nope, that's essentially what I'm saying too. For example, now I'm taking money I made with my economic activity, and spending it on keeping loved ones safe. If I was in a relevant industry, I could be keeping them safe directly, in less steps.

And others too, people who are not my family and I've never met, but would make me feel good to help them.

Would be the first time in history large business did something for the good of humanity, with nothing to gain from profit or future earnings.

Point taken, but I've yet to come across a business whose final beneficiary owners are not humans. Soon though.
