One of the most encouraging things I've noticed, now that the initial shock is wearing off, is the number of different organizations (both for-profit and nonprofit) starting rapid ad hoc collaborations to attack some aspect of the Covid-19 problem.

And we shall call that the Market

I like markets, but this isn't really an example of one. The for-profit companies aren't doing this to increase sales. They're effectively behaving like nonprofits.

IMO it's a mistake to consider that the market is limited to for profits agents. The market is what happens outside the sphère of state power. What makes a market entity IMO is - multiplicity of agents - lack of centralized head for the agents - private-initiated

I think in terms of three systems: market, private-voluntary-collective, state-owned. I am happy in a system which adopts the first two (market and private-voluntary-collective) and minimizes the third (state-owned) as much as possible.

Which companies specifically? Maybe they fear their customer base wil shrink? Brand equity for once this is all over? Doing feel-good stuff at a discount?(instead of taking profit then spend it on feeling good?)

Is it that surprising that they'd want to save their friends and families from dying? Do they need an ulterior motive?

Market = people freely cooperating for mutual enrichment. Mobilising against a systemic threat = people freely cooperating for mutual enrichment. They're behaving like market actors.

Companies or people doing well now, have the incentive to help at a short-term loss, to avoid major social changes, which can have bigger effects on them.

Profit doesn't have to be monitary. A market is simply a voluntary agreement between at least two people. If I have something you need and I volunteer to give it to you in exchange for money or just a good feeling, a transaction has occurred and a market exists.

true not usually, but in USA common discourse, at least, "market" has been narrowed to mean for-profit

I kind of disagree. There is good will, yes... but I can tell you there is a lot of creation going on. To the tune of “what can we do to survive”. What can I do to adjust my model to work in the new paradigm. Make yourselves “essential”, or support people who are.
