One of the most striking things about the coronavirus, at least in the English-speaking world, is how much more responsible individuals like @ScottGottliebMD, @JeremyKonyndyk, @Yascha_Mounk, @mlipsitch, and @NAChristakis seem than the people who are nominally in charge.
The phenomenon is a new variant of "if the people lead, the leaders will follow." At least, I hope they'll follow. And it makes me think more highly of Twitter, since without Twitter these people wouldn't have anything like the same reach.
We see the same thing in Germany. Minister of Health and Chancellor mostly follow what sentiment is created in the media, which in turn follows sentiment on Twitter. Underlines importance of such „decentral“ communication infrastructure as Twitter in times of crisis.
Twitter proving very useful during times of crisis.
My Twitter feed is filled with "it's just a bad flue". So I have the opposite experience.
Same things happened on Weibo, social media+ natural leaders really help implementing the distributed parts with a centralized government. Some sort of check-and-balance formed between social media and government.
Without Twitter, I wouldn't have been able to hear so much about this virus and prepare accordingly a whole month before it started blowing up.

In Kosovo everything was put to a halt, because of "we the people" approach / pressuring, communicating with gov officials
There are ZERO confirmed cases and Kosovo has blocked everything, flights, concerts, schools, public gatherings
the rest of the world should take notes!
I think about this daily
Personal opinion on Coronavirus : - Something to be concerned about but not outright fearful. Most cases are mild symptoms and recommended to stay at home and self isolate. - Situation in China is getting better. Good sign overall.
- Media likes to sell fear. Be mindful of this. We hear about the worst cases and deaths. This virus is mainly effecting the elderly and those with compromised immune systems or underlying illnesses.
