One of the most striking things about the coronavirus, at least in the English-speaking world, is how much more responsible individuals like @ScottGottliebMD, @JeremyKonyndyk, @Yascha_Mounk, @mlipsitch, and @NAChristakis seem than the people who are nominally in charge.

The phenomenon is a new variant of "if the people lead, the leaders will follow." At least, I hope they'll follow. And it makes me think more highly of Twitter, since without Twitter these people wouldn't have anything like the same reach.

There’s going to be congressional inquiries into the bureaucrats in charge for the next few years. I’m looking forward to learning what actually went on behind closed doors at the top.

Not just English speaking countries. This french scientist was calling for measures similar to Italy because of super-spreaders. The health ministers answer a few seconds later was that the term super-spreaders is stigmatizing and "we'll need to change it"https://mobile.twitter.com/Circonscripti18/status/1237855378894811138 …

Again it's not random. The people in charge are not selected on their ability to manage stuff (e.g. like they would with an exam or simulations), but on their ability to tell stories. Really shows the limitations of mediatic "democracy".

What's needed in this situation is a willingness to tell people hard truths about how their lives will have to change for a while. A populist is *never* going to be able to do that.

I think another one of the most striking things is cases exposed these days are almost all in the developed world. Does coronavirus prefer rich countries? I don’t think so...
