A friend pointed out that one reason the coronavirus death rate in Italy is so high is that the population is so old. 21.7% are 65 or over, vs 14.6% in South Korea.

Italy also tested 23k people, whereas South Korea tested 110k. A better explanation IMO is that Italy has more mild cases that are undetected.
