A large enough asteroid would reduce wealth inequality to zeropic.twitter.com/Q9PAM9tcNq

Though you mean this as a joke, an asteroid uses the only proven strategy for decreasing wealth inequality to near zero — to make everyone equally poor.

💯 If a global supply chain disaster made the poorest half 10% poorer & the wealthiest half 50% poorer, the greatest tragedies would still befall the poor. In the context Harold proposes, measuring wealth distribution is a great example of "play stupid games, win stupid prizes."

Speaking of economic collapse, who's funding privatized disaster relief? Start with fleet of helicopters, then transition to cargo UAVs. Drop supplies of anything anywhere in the world with huge markups to whoever can pay. Hard to justify stopping disaster relief. Best monopoly.

There's a fantastic book, "The Great Leveler", that talks about the only 4 things that have effectively and consistently reduced wealth inequality over time - mass mobilization warfare, state collapse, massive revolution, and catastrophic pandemics.

IMO wealth primarily serves to give people the freedom to live their lives as they choose rather than be stuck treading water with no land in sight. It’s not completely binary but at a certain point more wealth is not going to increase your freedom.

I think you could design policy to get more/all people to that state of freedom.

Maybe we could have a structure with limited levels of inequality. Say a range of 1-1000x. It's annoying to me how the debate over inequality always seems to coalesce into a binary choice: total equality or totally unrestricted wealth.

Which is irrelevant, because the majority is not suggesting wealth inequality should be near-zero
