Why are so many of our first books for kids about farm animals? My daughter might not see an actual cow for many years.

My school-librarian mother claims that children are innately curious about animals, so books are made for this interest, and that this also includes dinosaurs

I’ve been curious about this at all. Mentioned to

What always struck me about children’s literature and children’s television is that no adult’s job is considered menial, and all their work is considered vital to building their community. I’d totally quit software development to be a bus driver in a Sesame Street Universe.

That could be our Universe but you like capitalism

Animals feature prominently in myth and fables because they symbolize human instincts and archaic psychological features. Children can resonate with this level of less conscious image and instinctual process. It’s useful for adults to connect to that too.
