        I have started to consciously treat recent publications with suspicion, and old (relative to the discipline) publications with delight. If an article is old and still relevant, it is likely to stay relevant for even longer.

        You have it backward. It is now first-to-file. The previous first-to-invent system did give rise to lengthy priority battles (interference proceedings).
