one big trend ive seen over the past three years from a growing number of those in tech is utter contempt for the media no industry is unilaterally good (even media!) but it is interesting to see influential tech types pass this hate down to the next gen of founders

This has two components: feeling the contempt, and expressing it openly. But both ultimately have the same cause. The quality of journalism has declined, and this has made journalists less powerful, which makes it safe to criticize them openly.

+ social media means everyone can create content, so journos now compete against a bigger field of people who are *a lot* smarter

Safer to criticize? Never knew people were so afraid of speaking against the media. Or maybe I have been blissfully unaware due to growing up with individual opinion blogs and sites

Powerful organizations like YC have worsened the decline in journalism, by, for example, forming secret agreements with less ethical publications like Techcrunch because their reporting is so subservient and obedient.

I don't think it's declined. I think we've realised how bad it is because we have access to so many more opinions. You can go straight to say, the blogs of experts in self-driving cars rather than a journalist telling you about them.

Or maybe capital accreted above journalists in the last few decades, warping business incentives and providing additional power to resist strong journalism that goes against those wealthy interests? Driving some to even vindictively shut down news outlets? We might never know.

The quality hasn't declined. Google and Facebook killed newspapers.

Well... doesn’t killing newspapers make their quality decline?

You mean corrupt and biast reporting has made the mainstream media so laughable that they have list the power to make us believe the lies the are spreading. Don't worry it only affects those that can read. Your favourite 70- followers still believes you.

I think you’re getting it wrong. Prior to social media it was not possible to criticize journalism because no person could yell loud enough for the world to hear. You needed a newspaper. Today anyone with enough followers is a newspaper so we can criticize and compete with news.
