A big difference in custom is that most of Europe has some degree of social safeguard for the vulnerable whereas particularly in rural America the only closest thing is often the church. That gives churches a degree of power that you just don't see in a lot of other places.

In other parts of the world you might have seen unions providing a similar degree of support and the labour movement gaining political power. The labour movement tended to be keen on educating their members and that gradually resulted in a more left-wing orthodoxy.
