Hypothesis: One reason Democratic candidates can't jettison the far left in order to be what James Carville called a "majoritarian party" is that these people make up their campaign staffs.

Remember that the American "far left" is most countries' "just right of centre." Your Overton Window is so far right you can have a criminal cartel in charge and the media treats it as normal.
I'm talking about social customs more than economic policy. I think that's what alienates middle America. And those don't seem much different in Europe than America.

A big difference in custom is that most of Europe has some degree of social safeguard for the vulnerable whereas particularly in rural America the only closest thing is often the church. That gives churches a degree of power that you just don't see in a lot of other places.

In other parts of the world you might have seen unions providing a similar degree of support and the labour movement gaining political power. The labour movement tended to be keen on educating their members and that gradually resulted in a more left-wing orthodoxy.
