          I think it has more to do with American power, notions of independence, sovereignty, etc. We see a huge chunk of global trade miving from US-China to EU-China. Not because of land, but because UScis shaking off entanglements

          A man can walk for days, ride for weeks and sail for months. But personal transport made it easier to cross land than sea, which naturally leads to more pronounced regulation of the commons. Plus, you can can sleep on land without moving.
