The best defense against ideology may be the concept of a "bien pensant," someone who believes exactly what's considered appropriate among their peers. No one aware of that concept would want to be one.

Current mainstream ideologies hold strong belief in their "rebelness". So they might also be robust to such defense. I think that some analysis of why certain things are considered inappropriate and what was the last source that reinforced it's inappropriateness might be useful.
