noone wants to be that person who is "contrarian for the sake of being contrarian" either without good reasons to believe differently from their peers, their identity is merely based on...being disagreeable?

I'd say there is another way of looking at contrarian thinking : if many people believe the same thing, it may be simply because they're subjected to some external influence i.e., they haven't given proper thought to whatever it is they believe.

I don't think any "bien pensant" would ever admit being one one. "bien pensant" genuinely think they are morally superior, and imho, calling them out as "bien pensant" would only reinforce their belief.
