The #1 cause of startup death is making something no one wants. The #2 cause is spending too much. Those two account for so many deaths that I'm not even sure what #3 is. If you merely make something people want and don't spend too much, you're way ahead.

What is the #1 reason startups end up making something people don't want? What is the #1 reason startups spend too much?

Good questions. 1. The founders get some random idea for a product (their vision!) and lie to themselves about how much people want it. 2. Hiring too many people.

I think this answer goes back to the original #2. Bad hires

I was listening to Tim Ferriss interview Jim Collins during my morning commute. Notable that the primary trait of good to great CEOs is humility. Letting go of ego to grasp market truth is critical at all stages but in a startup it is a prerequisite for survival.

Great answer @paulg I have seen this first hand with I’m going to make a... I have 2 products that I built from customer input. 5yrs & 2yrs down the track I’m still making little changes from end users input. Don’t be to proud & outsources instead of hiring people.

How do you define too many people? Because if it was obvious that it was too many, the hiring person or CEO would have noticed it. Is there a reason people over hire?
