Andrew Sullivan's brilliant analysis of the cancellation of Alastair Stewart. If you want to learn how to write well, I can't imagine a better model.http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/01/andrew-sullivan-america-needs-a-miracle.html …

Lots of pessimism from these guys, expected from writers...doom and gloom moves units.

Only thing I found odd was a call to return to Christianity. What we need is a return to civil axioms of interracial brotherhood and a collective benefit of the doubt. Christianity is not the engine I would suggest.

Depends on your model of Christianity. If it’s actually following the Christianity Ezra included it can be. That’s, sadly, not the kind of Christianity we’re seeing where actual teaching of Christ is not at the forefront.

Excellent writing. For the pessimists: know we, America & humanity in general, have been more deeply divided before. What would Lincoln say to Klein’s offer of abatement via meditation? How can we appeal to the angels of our better nature?

I will offer one method to appeal to the better angels of our nature & abate political polarization: service. @josephcwells researching & writing on this now https://twitter.com/josephcwells/status/1212486413687644166?s=21 …https://twitter.com/josephcwells/status/1212486413687644166 …

Looking back on yourself at 18, if you had to do one year of service (Americorps, military, Teach for America, etc.) would you be better for it today?

I do not know if Stewart deserved to lose his job (I lean towards no) but this article seems to dismiss the claim that this was more than just that tweet, when this was actually supported elsewhere, this was a very public argument:https://twitter.com/KateMaltby/status/1222658042082230277?s=20 …

I've admired Alastair Stewart for years, and really enjoyed getting to know him a bit on here. BUT: I watched the actual exchange in REAL TIME, because I also follow and like his interlocutor. And it was much, much nastier than has been reported. It wasn't just the 'ape' quote.

I'm a big advocate of online civility even in the face of hostility, but we also have to understand the frustration that PoC have in a world where racism is everywhere. Accusing them of racism when they point out racism is hardly the answer to a less polararised society.

A gem. Tribalism, our primal brain clashing with modern ideals of equality - science, sociology offers no solution. Reconciliation of differences due to historical chance, discrimination or genetics( not proven) with liberty is tough. For solutions, I am biased towards meditation

My concept of meditation here is broad. For me this includes the best ideals of Christianity( minus the superstition), Buddhist/old Hindu concept of silent reflection/meditation (a uniquely eastern concept), with some elements of muslim Sufi mysticism and Martin Buber’s mysticism
