Everyone wants to blame Mark Zuckerberg for polarization and fake news. But if social media were fragmented into a thousand smaller companies instead of a few big ones, wouldn't polarization and fake news be worse?

But this argument also explains why smaller, fragmented social networks would be less of a threat. It would have less work that could go into them due to the total addressable market, and targeting them comprehensively would be much harder as the attack surface is much larger.

Message boards tended to have pretty aggressive top down moderation for dissenting views. How much of a problem is polarization and fake news on hacker news?
