Do you think it’s a bad sign that most everyone who worked for Trump seems to want him removed from office? It’s almost like maybe they learned something from being in close quarters with him that profoundly worries them

In a sense it's a bad sign, but it doesn't tell us anything we didn't know already.

Yes... but it should be the most damning evidence of incompetence of all. How can anyone ignore this, even if you agree with his policies? ~40% of the country support him - they aren’t all irrational, there are many reasonable people in there that can be convinced

Also it strikes me that this one fact is completely unprecedented in recent history. Even GWB - arguably the worst president before this - didn’t have this type of pattern

He is unprecedentedly bad, I agree. I think the ration subset of that 40% support him because they hate the Democrats so deeply that even Trump seems better.

Yes. That’s why it’s so critical Dems pick someone this year who can loosen the faith of those 40%. Primary is everything. I still think it’s possible for a landslide election with right strategy /candidate - UK and France have shown that divisions can be ended (for good or ill)

I think that right candidate was @HillaryClinton . And watching how she was treated has left many Democrats disillusioned about "independent" voters.

The supporters in my social circle (n~=50) seem to be motivated mostly out of fear (fear that they will be made outcasts, fear that their unborn will be killed, etc)

... I hope I'm right, but not sure I am. I'd rather believe that these people I once loved and cared about are motivated by fear rather than hate.

And, furthermore, why do they hate so much? If you put most Americans in the room, they could probably work out many compromises.

I think a lot of that 40% can also be explained by "otherwise-rational" people (a) not having enough cognitive tools & knowledge to assess whether government is working (esp. from afar), and (b) a picture of reality distorted by social circles & propaganda (read: Fox).

Trump's support is easier to understand if you think of him as Lord Brodrig. If the only thing keeping him out of jail after he leaves office is right-wing support, he's stuck with them.

Trump has a very high approval rating among Republicans. How does this jibe with your thesis?

Also: much of the right's actions can be explained by "football game" mentality: Valuing "winning" over "best". Choices are made based on perceived "team membership" of the voter/candidate. GOP is very good at manipulating this narrative; the left, catastrophically bad.
