In practice moderates come in both forms, but I think it will confuse people to use the word "centrist" for the kind on the right, because it's currently often used for the kind on the left. And etymologically it's a good match for the kind on the left. http://paulgraham.com/mod.html

This (among other reasons) is why I sometimes describe myself as moderate, but I never describe myself as centrist.

Moderate seems the better word to save face, in America anyway but what word do we use for those of us who have to hold our noses much of the time when faced with contemporary choices, and both are unpleasant? "Adults" (ie thoughtful grownups)
