I'm pretty sure VC is the apex occupation for:
- Needing to *signal* you're a contrarian,
BUT
- Needing to *invest* exactly like everyone else.

I disagree in the case of the very top firms. They can't invest like everyone else. If they mix other people's opinions with their own, they're only lowering the average level of insight.

Agreed. If you order by skill, I was referring to the bottom ~80% (numerically, not $ weighted) of the distribution. It's like the HF world. If you're closed to new $ and have been for a while (i.e. RenTech) it's for a reason. If you're not, that's often for the other reason.
