Every commercial micropayments platform has failed. The only way it would work is non-profit/decentralized with cryptocurrency. Square will offer hosted Lightning Network payment processing (taking a cut off gross) using Twitter as POC.
One take why they might avoid this though: The market size they see for that is not large enough. It may be better for them to focus on growth
