That "Follow instructions on the terminal" is a hack because the credit card processing is not integrated with the rest of the software.

Is there not potential for there to be a security hole if the card reader allowed for remote input of PIN numbers? By keeping the authentication on the reader itself the manufacturer is reducing this risk, closed source, IMO, although the result is poorer UX.

It's probably the bank, and banking regulations that lock it down. Same in Australia.
