When someone replies to a statement you made by calling you names, they're implicitly saying that's it's true. Otherwise they could have shown why you were wrong.

Yes, there are an enormous number of situations where cognitive dissonance reveals itself this way. Although I wouldn't call it a "pathology", cognitive dissonance is an innate characteristic of most healthy humans. The ability to self-deceive has been evolutionarily valuable.
